LECT (Language Evolution Collective) is a research project of the University of Zürich. Data controller and research contact: to be confirmed.
We only collect what you enter in the app or record with it:
Phone number or email address
Identifies your account and receives the one-time code used to sign in.

Stored only as a cryptographic hash — never in readable form.
Profile details
Name, year of birth, country, place of residence, and the languages you speak — the research data itself. You may also add family members as additional profiles.
Location of your residence (optional)
Only if you tick the box while entering a residence: your device's coordinates are read once and saved with that address. You can leave the box unticked and type the place instead.
Survey answers
Your responses to the surveys, together with which profile answered and when.
Audio and video recordings
The recordings you make with the camera and microphone as part of a task. They are stored on your device until they have been uploaded.
Connections you create
If you invite a family member or accept an invitation, the link between the two accounts is stored.
Sign-in activity
The time of your last sign-in and how many times you have signed in, so the app can greet you correctly and we can spot misuse.
The app contains no advertising, no analytics and no tracking of any kind.
To run your account and to carry out linguistic research into how language and culture change across generations and regions. Research results are published in aggregated form. Legal basis and retention period: to be confirmed.
We never sell your data and never pass it on for advertising.
All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted (HTTPS). Passwords are hashed. Recordings you make offline stay on your device until the app can upload them, and are then removed from the device queue.
You can ask us to delete your account and the data belonging to it at any time. Open your profile in the app and choose "Delete my account", or write to the research contact above. We confirm your request in the app, remove your account and your contributions, and only keep research data that has already been anonymised and can no longer be traced back to you. The exact processing time is to be confirmed.
You may ask what we hold about you, have it corrected, have it deleted, or withdraw your participation — without giving a reason and without any disadvantage. Participation is voluntary. Protocole scientifique
